Welcome to 'Bois Mocassin Woods'

This web site is dedicated to our natural world. We are currently residing on a section of land on the edge of a lake, where we have attempted to create a bird and butterfly friendly habitat.

Observing nature is a delightful pastime and we enjoy roles as citizen scientists participating in Project FeederWatch and the Loon Survey through Bird Studies Canada.

Some of the bird and other wildlife photos were taken during Tony Beck's birding field trips. Other photos were taken on my own around Ottawa, various places in Quebec and other places around the country. My camera is a Canon 50D with a Canon 300mm F4.0 lens and a 1.4x extender.

Loon Survey

Loons

We have been participating in the Loon Survey since 1991. Usually around April 20th the Loons arrive at the lake. The male loon looks for a suitable nest site and in early July the chicks are born. Unfortunately for the past four years they have not been successful due to egg predation. To find out more information go to the Loon Survey web site.

Project FeederWatch

Between November and April we count the number of birds that visit our feeders. The counts are sent to Project FeederWatch. The data helps scientists track the movement of winter bird populations. To find out more go to the Project FeederWatch web site.
